1. Prior Knowledge: Making connections helps readers activate their prior knowledge - the foundation in which new knowledge is built. When readers connect what they read which what they already know, they create a framework for understanding the text

2. Relating to the text: When readers connect the text to their own experiences, emotions, or values it becomes more meaningful and relevant. This personal connection promotes active reading and deeper levels of comprehension. 

3. Transfer of Learning Making connections helps facilitate the transfer of learning from one context to another. This ability to transfer skills to new situations promotes a more robust understanding of what they read and comprehend.
