We Explicitly Teach Vocabulary

Vocabulary plays a crucial role in understanding written text. When a reader encounter’s unfamiliar words or terms, their comprehension is significantly hindered.  Here are just a few reasons this explicit instruction is so important:

  1. Word Recognition: Explicit vocabulary instruction helps students develop strong word recognition skills, enabling them to quickly and accurately identify words they read. When students encounter unfamiliar words, they have the strategies and skills to decode and understand those words.

  2. Vocabulary depth and breadth: By exposing students to not only vocabulary words and their meanings, but their shades of meaning and relationships to other words, it allows students to better comprehend the nuances of texts which leads to a more sophisticated understanding of the author's intent and message.

  3. Comprehension of complex texts: Explicit vocabulary instruction helps with understanding domain or subject specific texts by giving students the background knowledge to navigate them independently

  4. Contextual Comprehension: Inferring meaning through the use of context clues allows students to rely on their understanding of the context surrounding the words to make educated guesses about unfamiliar words without sacrificing understanding.

In each Pathway at Literacy Logic, your student will be explicitly taught vocabulary that is directly related to the reading provided. This will lay the groundwork for more vocabulary development as they continue to work through the material.
