Fluency & Repeated Readings
Repeated readings provide opportunities for learners to practice reading a text multiple times with the goal of improving their reading speed, accuracy, and prosody. By giving students the opportunity for repeated readings at Literacy Logic, we are refining their reading skills through:
Automatization of word recognition: As students encounter the same words multiple times, the process of decoding and identifying words becomes less laborious and allows readers to focus less on individual words and more on the flow of text.
Increasing reading speed: As their familiarity with a text grows, they can read at a faster pace without sacrificing accuracy or comprehension. Gradually increasing speed while maintaining understanding, promoting fluent and efficient reading.
Improving accuracy: By encountering the same text multiple times, readers become more proficient in recognizing and pronouncing words correctly. They become familiar with phonetic patterns, word structures, and irregularities in the text. This reduces errors and contributes overall comprehension.
Enhanced prosody and expression: Rhythm, intonation, and expression in reading help readers develop a better sense of pacing, pauses, and emotions throughout their oral reading. This allows learners to become aware of the deeper meanings within a text and improve engagement and overall understanding.
Building confidence and motivation: Confidence and growth mindset are key to motivating learners to engage in complex and challenging texts. Repeated readings expose readers to the text multiple times and allow for improvements in their speed and accuracy. These successes will pave the way for others to come as they improve on their literacy skills.
